“The tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs, and after Jesus’ resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people.”-Matt 27:52&53
What did risen dead people actually look like 2000 years ago? My guess, probably different. Our attempt is simply to connect with our own pop-culture perception of the risen dead, which I think gives little credit to actual, God-breathed resurrection.
Nonetheless, we hope to get God’s message across in our own little way. And, for the record, we dressed up like zombies, not as zombies. We’re risen dead, not zombies. There’s a difference. We’re not out to chomp your brains. Notice the lack of fresh blood stains?
As far as the outreach goes, we set up a Bible spray paint workshop just outside Robb Field Skateboard Park in Ocean Beach, San Diego, CA on Easter Sunday, 2010. We chose Easter Sunday since it sounds like that’s the day Scripture says those dead dudes peeps rose. Young people got to direct the spray paint stenciling of their own new pocket-sized New Testaments, referred to as “Daggers”, and take them for free. After a few hours, we got a bunch more Daggers and walked down Newport Ave, handing them out to anyone interested in whatever four dudes dressed up like zombies were handing out. We had more than a few takers. My guess is they probably didn’t think we were handing out Bibles. A photo insert inside each Dagger explained the outreach and Scripture reference. Altogether, 100 Daggers got out that day.
Thanks to Schumann, Jake, Jim, and Keto for taking the time to have God raise them from the dead. Very special thanks to Amanda, Diane, Liko, and Felice for rockin’ the makeup application! Diane and Philip, rad photos too.
